Rumors were saying that Robert Redford’s Sundance Film Festival may plan to expand to New York City, but a spokeswoman for the Sundance Institute denied it.
New York Post reported on Friday that the institute is in negotiations with real estate developers and film industry insiders to develop facilities in Brooklyn’s Dumbo. This initiation is possibly to compete with Tribeca Film Festival, started by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal.
Later the day, a spokeswoman announced to The Wrap , “There is no truth to rumors of plans for Sundance Institute to host a film festival in Brooklyn in the immediate future.” She said that the film festival is always looking for opportunities to expand, but the current focus is to prepare for the 2013 Sundance Film Festival that kicks off January 17.
Sundance Film Festival is one of the largest independent film festivals in the United States. It takes place annually in Utah since 1978. This year, the film festival will hold premieres, including Before Midnight starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, Don Jon’s Addiction with Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
