What happens when one of the biggest sports events of the year combines with the biggest party of the year? According to locals: Super Gras!
For only the second time in history, the two major events will be happening at the same place at the same time — with the Super Bowl on February 3rd and Mardi Gras just over a week later on February 12th.
The events are occurring just seven and half years after Hurricane Katrina and the city is hoping to show everyone how much they’ve rebuilt over the years. The President of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation Jay Cicero told The NY Daily News , “If you had asked me back then, the week after the storm, whether or not the Superdome was going to be able to be renovated, whether or not the Saints would be able to return to New Orleans the very next season… whether we would have attracted the Super Bowl for 2013…I would’ve said, ‘There’s absolutely no way.’ ”
And now, after much hard work and billions of dollars, the city is finally ready to welcome visitors back for a celebration they’ll never forget. According to The Associated Press, an estimated 125,000- 150,000 people will be arriving in New Orleans for the game.
