30 Rock creator and actress Tina Fey is reportedly joining the cast of Disney’s sequel to 2011’s The Muppets.
While The Muppets sequel is likely to include as many A-list cameos as past Muppet movies, Fey is in negotiations for the female lead role, The Hollywood Reporter first reported Tuesday.
Modern Family star Ty Burrell and The Office’s Ricky Gervais joined the project last month. The plot is still being kept under wraps, but we do know that Kermit, Miss Piggy and friends will travel to Europe and Burrell will play an Interpol agent. It’s likely that the film will center on a caper, similar to The Great Muppet Caper.
THR’s sources say that Fey could play a Russian prison guard.
The Muppets director James Bobin will be back and co-wrote the script with Nicholas Stoller. Producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are also back. Production is set to start in London this month.
Jason Segel, who starred in and co-wrote the 2011 film, is not returning due to other commitments. Amy Adams also starred in the 2011 film.
Fey, who is celebrating the end of 30 Rock this month and is co-hosting the Golden Globes with Amy Poehler this weekend, stars in Admission with Paul Rudd. That film hits theaters in March. She previously worked with Gervais on his 2009 film The Intention of Lying.
