U.S. Treasury secretary nominee Jack Lew gets heat for loopy signature

By Daniel S Levine,

Ever since Jack Lew was tapped by President Obama to be the next U.S. Treasury Secretary last week, the media has been fascinated by his loopy signature that looks more like the swirls on a cupcake than an actual signature. Obama himself even joked about it and handwriting expert Donald Trump says he considers it “extremely secretive.”

The Internet has already turned it into a meme. As Forbes notes, one Reddit post has soared on the site. “Someone should teach Jack Lew cursive. This abomination of a signature is about to grace every dollar bill. FIXED,” the poster wrote, linking to an image of a Hostess cupcake.

BuzzFeed also listed 14 things that look like Lew’s signature.

Yahoo! News even created a Lew signature generator, in case you wanted to see what it would look like if Lew wrote your name.

“I had never noticed Jack's signature” until the media pointed it out, Obama noted when he made Lew’s nomination official, reports Politico. “I considered rescinding my offer to appoint him,” the president joked.

The president added that he will ask Lew to “make at least one letter legible in order to not debase our currency should he be confirmed as secretary of the Treasury.”

Trump even had to comment on the signature when he was on Fox News’ Fox & Friends Monday morning, notes Politico.

“You know, I really actually do analyze handwriting,” the Celebrity Apprentice host explained. “I think you can tell a lot about a person by their handwriting and his handwriting is not quite as bad as people think. It’s extremely secretive, and it shows he’s a very, very secretive person, unbelievably secretive, which of itself is interesting.”

He added, “I think he has to develop a new signature, that’s one thing I can tell you, because that signature is amazing when you look at it.”
