Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, known as ‘the Blade Runner,' wept in court when prosecutors charged him with premeditated murder in the killing of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius, who once was an inspiration and model for of people, could end up in jail for rest of his life.
The Guardian reported that Pistorius was formally charged for killing his girlfriend, the 30-year-old model and reality TV show star. Even though local news and rumors said that Pistorius mistakenly shot Steenkamp for thinking her as a burgler, prosecutors didn’t seem to agree this saying. They argued Pistorius had planned Steenkamp’s killing.
Steenkamp was shot four times with a 9mm pistol.
The shooting also invokes discussion on the violence in South Africa. According to the Associated Press, South Africa has one of the world’s highest rates of shooting deaths, behind only Columbia.
Pistorius is a six-time Paralympics gold medalist and first double-amputee to compete in the Olympics. However, despite of his inspiring sports spirit, he is not such a model in other aspects. He crashed a speedboad in 2009, possibly because of alcohol. In the same year, he was arrested and charged with common assault by South Africa police, but the charge was dropped later.
