On Sunday night, Daniel Day-Lewis not surprisingly took home the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Lincoln, and then surprised us all when he cracked a few jokes on stage.
Day-Lewis, who made Oscar history Sunday night as he took home his third Oscar in the Best Actor category, cracked a few jokes before thanking the people who helped him get there.
“It’s a strange thing because three years ago before we decided to do a straight swap, I had actually been committed to play Margaret Thatcher and Meryl [Streep] was Steven’s first choice for Lincoln,” said Day-Lewis during his acceptance speech. “I’d like to see that version.”
Twitter reacted to the actor’s humorous speech, including Mario Lopez, who tweeted, “Also, Daniel Day Lewis was pretty funny in his speech. Nice to see an intense guy lighten up...”

Even funny girl Zooey Deschanel enjoyed the actor’s speech, tweeting, “Daniel Day Lewis is making some solid jokes!”
The three-time Oscar winner’s speech seemed to be a hit. Day-Lewis gave a seemingly effortless delivery, saying, “Steven didn’t have to persuade me to play Lincoln but I had to persuade him that perhaps if I was going to do it, it shouldn’t be a musical.”
