Forest Whitaker is slamming a New York City deli after an employee frisked him and accused the Phone Booth actor of shoplifting.
According to TMZ, Whitaker was leaving the Milano Market Friday when he was stopped and frisked after an employee accused the Academy Award winner of taking something off of the shelf and attempting to leave with it.
When the employee found that Whitaker was in fact not stealing, he was free to go. Now, he is furious and embarrassed and his rep has since released a statement.
“This was an upsetting incident given the fact that Forest did nothing more than walk into the deli,” his rep explains. “What is most unfortunate about this situation is the inappropriate way store employees are treating patrons of their establishment.“
"Frisking individuals without proof/evidence is a violation of rights," the rep continued before adding, "Forest did not call the authorities at the request of the worker who was in fear of losing his employment. Forest asked that, in the future, the store change their behavior and treat the public in a fair and just manner.”
A manager for the Milano Deli has since denied the incident, telling E! News,” Nothing ever happened at this location yesterday."
