Grammy ratings drop from last year’s Whitney Houston tribute

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards declined in viewership from last year’s show. Although the telecast featured performances by Elton John, Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, and Fun., it couldn’t match up to the 39 million viewers who tuned in last year.

The New York Daily News reported a 40% increase in ratings from 2011 to 2012. This year, however, Sunday night’s airing only pulled in about 28.12 million viewers, only slightly better than the 2011 Grammy Awards.

Entertainment Weekly also reported on the slip in ratings, yet insiders expected the drop given the tragic circumstances surrounding last year’s broadcast. Whitney Houston’s death, which occurred the day before, caused a record-setting spike in viewership.

Some have speculated that the fall could be responsible, at least in part, for AMC’s mid-season return of The Walking Dead.

CBS will host the Academy Awards on February 24.
