Happy Birthday to Darren Criss, who turns 26 today!
Darren Everett Criss, born on February 5, 1987 in San Francisco, California to Cerina and Charles Criss, is an American actor, singer-songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist.
Even in his childhood, Criss’ interest in music and performing was prominent. At the age of 5, Criss was accepted into the Young Conservatory program at the American Conservatory Theater. His passion continued throughout his years, up until he attended the University of Michigan, where he majored in theater performance and minored in musicology and Italian.
While at the university, he performed in several stage productions, including Pride and Prejudice. With the help of his university’s student-run theater organization, Criss established the foundation for his theater company StarKid Productions in 2009. Since it’s founding, the theater troupe has produced several stage shows, including the Harry Potter series A Very Potter Musical, A Very Potter Sequel and A Very Potter Senior Year. Some of their original productions include Me and My Dick and Starship. Criss is credited as the primary composer for many of the shows.
After his graduation in 2009, Criss went on to star in Fox’s comedy series Glee as Blaine Anderson, an openly gay high school student playing opposite Chris Colfer’s Kurt Hummel. In January 2012, Criss made his Broadway debut as Daniel Radcliffe’s successor as J. Pierrepont Finch in the revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
Criss is a strong advocate for LGBT rights and is an active supporter for The Trevor Project.
Criss’ film debut as Lee in Girl Most Likely (previously known as Imogene) will be premiering in its theatrical release July 19, later this year. Criss even performed “When You Wish Upon A Star” at President Obama’s second inaugural ball.
