'Identity Thief' dominates the weekend box office

By Christopher Rosa,

The Jason Bateman-produced Identity Thief, where he costars alongside Melissa McCarthy, topped this weekend’s box office.

The slapstick comedy raked in an impressive $36.6 million, Reuters reports.

Identity Thief’s weekend sweep should not come as a surprise. We previously reported that the film dominated Friday’s box office, and it followed suit for Saturday and Sunday.

The zombie romance Warm Bodies came in second place, taking in $11.5 million. The critically acclaimed medical thriller Side Effects came in third with $10 million. Silver Linings Playbook and Hansel & Gretel placed fourth and fifth respectively.

We also reported a less-than-nice critic’s sharp words towards McCarthy and her new film. Rex Reed from The New York Observer called McCarthy a “gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success… [she is a ] female hippo… cacophonous…[and] tractor-sized.”

However, it appears McCarthy gets the last laugh with her number one ranked film, countless praise from other critics, and a new movie with Sandra Bullock, The Heat, which is set to release this June.
