A Nelson Mandela biopic that stars Idris Elba and was produced last year will finally reach theaters in the U.S. thanks to The Weinstein Company. The distributor has picked up North American rights to the film, titled Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
According to The Wrap, The Other Boleyn Girl direct Justin Chadwick helmed the project, which was written by William Nicholson (Gladiator, Les Miserables). Anant Singh produced the film.
The Prometheus actor co-stars with Naomie Harris (Skyfall), who plays Mandela’s wife, Winnie.
Mandela is based on the world icon’s 1996 autobiography of the same name. Singh had been communicating with Mandela before he was even released from prison and elected South Africa’s president. Singh later won the rights to the book when it was published.
The film was made on location last year in South Africa. The production filmed in Cape Town and Johannesburg, notes The Hollywood Reporter.
“TWC is the best North American distributor for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and I am delighted to continue our association of over 20 years with Harvey, which began with Sarafina and Cry, The Beloved Country,” Singh said in a statement.
TWC will also distribute in Australia and New Zealand. Pathe will distribute in the U.K. and France.
