James Franco to be Grand Marshall for Daytona 500

By Daniel S Levine,

James Franco will not be at the Oscars this year, but he will still be on TV Sunday, Feb. 24. The actor is going to be the Grand Marshall at the Daytona 500 in Florida.

Franco, who stars in the upcoming Disney movie Oz: The Great And Powerful, will be the person who yells “Drivers, start your engines!” According to Fox Sports, he will also attend the drivers’ meeting before the race and will take part in other pre-race ceremonies. Franco will also get to ride in a grand marshal car during one of the pace laps just before the race.

As Entertainment Weekly notes, the Daytona 500 starts the NASCAR season on Feb. 24 on Fox. The race starts at 12 p.m. and includes 200 laps for 500 miles.

Franco is hardly the first celebrity to be Grand Marshall. John Travolta, Ben Affleck, Nicolas Cage, Kate Upton, Jane Lynch and Matthew McConaughey have all appeared at the Daytona 500 in the past.

Oz: The Great And Powerful hits theaters on March 8. Franco, who plays the title character, co-stars with Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis. On Thursday, Disney and Island Def Jam announced that Mariah Carey will be recording a song for the film.
