Newly-appointed Secretary of State John Kerry addressed his staff today to mark his first day as the new head of the State Department following Hillary Clinton.
Kerry thanked Clinton for her work as Secretary of State during his informal speech, as well as outlined his top priorities for his tenure.
During his address Kerry asked, “Can a man actually run the State Department? I don't know.” Listeners laughed and applauded. The new Secretary of State then added, “As the saying goes, I have big heels to fill."
Kerry then talked about his 11-year-old riding a bike into East Berlin. He stated that the Foreign Service has always been in his genes. Kerry told listeners, “Some of what I've learned is how difficult life can be for people in the Foreign Service... I understand that. I also understand how critical it is that you have somebody there advocating for you. The dangers could not be more clear."
New York Times writer Natalie Angier tweeted, “Taking over at State, John Kerry quipped he had ‘big heels to fill.’ Aww, that's so cute! Guess I missed all the pix of Hillary in stilettos.”
Many Twitter users joked that Kerry will now be signing his tweets with his initials, J.K.
One user tweeted, “As Secretary of State, John Kerry is going to be signing his tweets with JK. I can see it now. 'We just invaded Canada-JK.'"
