Johnny Depp will play the notorious Boston criminal Whitney Bulgar in Black Mass, directed by Barry Levinson, announced Cross Creek Picture and Exclusive Media on Saturday.
The movie is adapted from the New York Times bestseller Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob, written by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerland O’Neil. It reveals the real-life story of the most notorious South Boston gangster Whitney Bulgar, who was FBI’s most wanted and also an FBI informant, reported The Wrap.
Cross Creek and Exclusive Media will produce the film and sell it internationally in Berlin to foreign buyers, while Universal will release the film domestically in North America, reported Hollywood Reporter.
Depp’s western action The Lone Ranger will be released in theatres in the upcoming July, and his next film Transcendence is awaiting a rewritten script. Black Mass intends to produce in May.
