The Sports Illustrated swimsuit models will be everywhere for the next few days, since the issue hits newsstands today. Kate Upton has been front and center, since she landed on the cover for the second year in a row. The Florida native was photographed in Antarctica and spoke about the experience on the Today Show this morning.
She told the show that she was completely surprised when she was told that she was going to the coldest part of the earth. “It was freezing,” she explained. “I’m from Florida, so it wasn’t great for me. When I came back I was losing hearing and eyesight because my body was shutting down, it was working so hard to keep warm. I was thinking warm thoughts.”
Upton was photographed wearing only a skimpy bathing suit and on the cover, she is shown only wearing a parka and the bottom half of a bikini. “I could really only do it for a minute and then everyone would come running and throw blankets on top of me and they would build me like a little blanket cave,” she said. “I really went all out on this. We went there thinking we might not even get a shot, and came back with the cover.”
MJ Day, the issue’s senior editor, told CNN that the Antarctic was the “Hail Mary” of the issue, which includes models on all seven continents.
“I could have had a blizzard. Kate could have had shivering fits you could not shoot around. (Instead) we had six days of perfect weather,” Day said.
She continued, “Antarctica was my favorite place on Earth...I'm one of the most jaded travelers you will ever meet, but the whole thing was a religious experience. Spend your money. It's worth it.”
