Katie Couric is the victim of a heartless prank. The journalist explained to her audience Tuesday that every night around 2am police respond to her house after a 911 call comes in from her late husband’s phone.
Couric, who was married to Jay Monahan before his untimely passing of colon cancer in 1998, explained the obvious prank calls to her audience noting at least 10 different occasions over the last month,New York Daily News reports.
She explained the uncomfortable situation to her audience during the commercial break, saying she’s called upon the help of police commissioner Raymond Kelly. "So I called Ray Kelly, who I know just through the years seeing at different things. ‘Ray, this is so weird but can you help me? I don’t know what to do,’” she said.
Couric opted to share the news as she showed up to the set of Katie late, noting her exhaustion as she “hasn’t slept” very well as the calls keep her awake.
“I don’t know why. I got no sleep, so I am just oversharing,” she mentioned, noting she tossed and turned for hours following the call.
“Every day, every time at 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning. I was out of town the last time it happened and apparently it happened before when nobody was home,” she explained. The talk-show host noted that she feels she is the victim of ‘spoofing,’ when someone hijacks a device to make faux calls like the emergency calls in this situation.
Daily News notes that Couric never changed the land line name out of Monahan’s name even after his passing.
The Associated Press reports that authorities are looking into if Couric is the victim of a prank or if there is something wrong with her landline.
