Latin 'American Idol' winner Martha Heredia arrested for allegedly smuggling heroin

By Sarah Burbank-Douglas,

Latin American Idol winner Martha Heredia has been arrested after allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin onto an airplane bound for New York.

According to Perez Hilton, Heredia was caught in the Dominican Republic with 2.9 pounds (1.3 kilograms) of heroin stuffed into her platform shoes which were inside of her suitcase.

Heredia, who won the 2009 season of the singing competition, hasn’t lived without legal troubles since winning. She was also convicted of killing a Haitian boy with her car and forced to pay over a million dollars in damages to the family.

The Associated Press reports that Heredia was arrested Wednesday and was interrogated shortly thereafter by officials to see if she is a part of a larger drug-smuggling circle.

A prosecutor for the state has released a statement following the arrest saying, “It's very sad that young people who have so much promise, who were bestowed by life with all the grace in the world and an unquestionable talent, because of ambition, bad advice or simply to obtain money see themselves in situations like this."
