Lisa Lampanelli calls her friend Lena Dunham the n-word, laughs at criticism

By Daniel S Levine,

Any fan of comedienne Lisa Lampanelli knows that she likes to be provocative, but her decision to call Lena Dunham her the n-word over the weekend drew plenty of criticism. Lampanelli defended her use of the word and is laughing off the critics.

On Sunday, Lampanelli posted a picture of herself with Girls creator Dunham on her WhoSay page, writing, “Me with my ni**a @LenaDunham of @HBOGirls - I love this beyotch!!”

The Huffington Post noted that this quickly sparked criticism from her Twitter followers and bloggers. Jezebel’s Laura Beck was particularly annoyed, writing, “No matter how many times she talks about how she slept with a black man, the n-word is still off-limits.”

As E! News reports, Lampanelli responded by tweeting, “Glad 2 have given u something other than Alec Baldwin to talk about on my day off! Loving & laughing at it all! Thanks, Twitterverse!”

She has also retweeted several tweets of support from her fans.

Last night, she wrote, “That seems to be a good 1 to end things on. Gotta go. There's a 6PM show of Django Unchained. Have to go C if it's racist. LOL.”

Lampanelli also gave a lengthy statement to The Huffington Post, writing, “The N-word ending in 'er' is far different context from the word ending in 'a.' Ask any person who knows the urban dictionary, it means 'friend’...And by the way, if I had put the word ending in 'er,' that would have been a very derogatory thing about Lena meaning she is less than me, and I view her as very above me. 'A' on the end means 'my friend.'”

She noted that other comics use the word and wrote that “I won't stop anytime soon, just because your ass is up on Twitter. I have always used in my act every racial slur there is for Asians, blacks, gays, and Hispanics. To me, it's acceptable if the joke is funny and if it is said in a context of no hate. It's about taking the hate out of the word.”
