A lot goes into deciding which musicians walk away with the biggest payout at the end of the year. In 2012, Madonna topped the chart.
An in-depth look at the Music’s Top 40 Money Makers list shows that, for these artists, concert revenue makes up 68.9 percent of their total earnings, according to Billboard. Concert profits are then followed by record sales (digital and CD) as well as money obtained from users streaming artists’ tracks.
However, Billboard reports that many of the more successful touring performers are either not creating as much music currently, or are not selling as much. Madonna cashed in on both during her hugely successful tour which supported the release of her new album, MDNA.
Joining the pop star in the top 10 was Bruce Springsteen at number two, Roger Waters, Van Halen, Kenny Chesney, Dave Matthews Band, Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, Coldplay, and Justin Bieber.
