Mindy McCready has become the fifth cast member of Dr. Drew Pinsky's Celebrity Rehab to die in recent years. Here we take a look at their life and how they lost their battle with alcohol and drug abuse.
5. Mindy McCready
Country singer Mindy McCready appeared on the third season of Dr. Drew’s show Celebrity Rehab. McCready rose to fame after her debut album, Ten Thousand Angels, but then struggled with alcohol and drug abuse, depression, served time in jail twice, and had multiple suicide attempts. After her partner, David Wilson, committed suicide in January of this year, McCready had her 6-year-old son, Zander, and 10-month old son, Zayne, taken away from her and was ordered to rehab. She was then found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Feb. 17, 2013.
4. Joey Kovar
Joey Kovar appeared on the third season of Celebrity Rehab. Kovar appeared on The Real World: Hollywood in 2008 but was kicked off the MTV show due to his alcohol and drug use. A personal trainer and aspiring actor, his substance abuse included alcohol, cocaine, ecstasy and steroids. Kovar had a 3-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter and was found dead on Aug. 17, 2012 at the age of 29.
3. Rodney King
Rodney King appeared on the second season of Dr. Drew’s show. King was most famous for being attacked by Los Angeles police officers after a high speed car chase in 1991. The beating, which was caught on tape, caused an outrage all over the world and one of the worst riots in U.S. history. Although King was then awarded millions in a settlement and also wrote a book, he continued to have trouble with the law. On June 17, 2012, 47-year-old King was found dead in his swimming pool in his California home. It was later revealed that King was found with multiple drugs in his system, including cocaine, marijuana and alcohol.
2. Jeff Conaway
Jeff Conaway appeared on the second season of Celebrity Rehab. He was best known for appearing on the TV show Taxi and for his role as Kenickie in Grease. Conaway had long struggled with alcohol, cocaine and prescription drugs and was found unconscious in his California home in May 2011 at the age of 60. After remaining in a coma for several weeks, he was later taken off life support.
1. Mike Starr
Mike Starr was on the third season of Dr. Drew’s show. He was a member of the rock band Alice in Chains and battled with drugs such as heroin, cocaine and crystal meth for several years, causing him to have 30 stints in rehab. On March 8, 2011 at the age of 44, Starr was found dead from a drug overdose in Salt Lake City, Utah.
