It was close, but on a night of mostly down numbers for the networks, ABC’s Modern Family managed to draw a better rating in the key demo than Fox’s American Idol. Then again, Idol was two hours, while Modern Family was just the half hour. Still, Idol’s audience was the smallest for a Wednesday episode since 2002.
Idol averaged 13.15 million viewers and a 2.8 18-49 rating over two hours. According to EW, this is the smallest key demo rating for the show on a Wednesday since 2003 and the smallest audience since 2002. In comparison, Modern Family had 10.6 million viewers and a 3.9 18-49 rating, making it the first time that the sitcom has beat Idol in early Nielsen returns.
CBS finished second with 9.76 million viewers and a 2.4 18-49 rating. Survivor had 9.4 million viewers and a 2.6 18-49 rating, while Criminal Minds had 10.59 million and a 2.6 rating. CSI had 9.27 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating.
ABC came in third overall with 6.875 million viewers and a 2.2 18-49 rating, since everything around Modern Family dragged its average numbers down. The Middle had 7.9 million viewers and a 2.1 18-49 rating, notes HitFix. The Neighbors scored 6.12 million and a 1.7 rating. After Modern Family, Suburgatory had just 6.3 million viewers and a 2.3 18-49 rating. Nashville closed off the night with 5.13 million viewers and a 1.6 18-49 rating.
NBC had just 5.16 million viewers and a 1.6 18-49 rating. Whitney had 3.55 million viewers and a 1.2 18-49 rating. Guys With Kids’ wrapped up its first season with 3.15 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating. Law & Order: SVU had 5.58 million viewers and a 1.6 18-49 rating. Chicago Fire had 6.54 million viewers and a 1.9 18-49 rating. It actually beat CSI in the demo, so there’s some good news for NBC...finally.
Over at The CW, Arrow had 3.26 million viewers and a 1.0 18-49 rating, up a bit from last week, notes THR. Supernatural had a 0.9 18-49 rating and 2.2 million viewers.
