Monopoly iron token sent to jail, cat lovers vote in cat token

By Daniel S Levine,

If the internet has proven anything, it is that there are many, many cat lovers out there. Their numbers were just too strong and they voted to introduce a new cat token to Monopoly. It will replace the iron token.

Last month, Hasbro launched a Facebook poll, in which Monopoly players could pick the tokens they want to keep in a new edition of the classic game and could pick from a selection of new tokens to add. In addition to the cat, voters could pick a robot, ring, helicopter and guitar.

According to USA Today, the iron received just 8 percent of the “Save Your Token” vote. The Scottie dog earned the most with 29 percent.

The cat earned 31 percent of the vote in the new token poll.

Jonathan Berkowitz, vice president of marketing for Hasbro Gaming, considered the promotion a success, since it brought in fans from all over the world. “It's been an exciting campaign and a lot of Monopoly fans around the world have gotten involved,” he told ABC News.

Businesses even got involved in the vote. One of the first was 9Lives, which urged people to vote for the cat. After the results were announced, the company celebrated by posting, “We did it!”

Iron token fans will get one last chance to buy a set with the piece. This month, Target will sell a “Golden Token” edition, which will also feature the five new pieces that lost against the cat. The cat will make its standard set debut in the fall.
