Morrissey, the former Smiths frontman, abruptly announced Monday that he has cancelled tonight’s scheduled appearance on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!. It was supposed to be his first performance since cancelling shows due to health problems, but when he found out the cast of Duck Dynasty was going to be on the show as well, the PETA supporter cancelled.
According to Rolling Stone, the singer released a statement on Monday, noting that he was “thankful” to be invited. But he felt that appearing on the same show as the Duck Dynasty cast would compromise his beliefs.
“Morrissey would be honored to play the show, if Duck Dynasty were removed,” the statement read.
Morrissey explained, “As far as my reputation is concerned, I can't take the risk of being on a show alongside people who, in effect, amount to animal serial killers. If Jimmy cannot dump Duck Dynasty then we must step away.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard, Kimmel’s producers were surprised by the announcement. They offered to have Morrissey tape his performance, but he still declined and they only learned about the cancellation from the statement. The show picked the band Churchill to perform in his place.
Duck Dynasty is a hit reality show on A&E that focuses on a family that has made a fortune off duck hunting products.
Morrissey has been a long-time animal rights activist, doing work for PETA and is a vegetarian. Earlier this month, the Staples Center in LA agreed to go 100 percent vegetarian for his show later this week.
