New in Comics - February 6, 2013

By Michael R. Murray,

The generic logo Free Comic Book Day T-shirts are coming this week.  It’s not the other official Jimmy Cheung T, but that’s a classified image and I just couldn’t order something I have no idea how it looks.  My money’s too important to spend unseen.  I’m not sorry about that either.  That’s a rant for another day.  This week is the generic logo T.  You’ll need to check for availability and price…

If you can’t get enough of the classics, from Dark Horse Comics comes the Alice in Wonderland hardcover, $19.99, by Rod Espinosa.  Everything we know and love is here as Alice discovers that Wonderland is a good place to visit, but she wouldn’t want to live there…

King Conan: The Pheonix on the Sword trade paperback, $14.99, by Timothy Truman and Tomas Giorello with a cover assist by Jose Villarrubia and Andrew Robinson has the King beset on all sides by scheming politicians plotting his demise.  Unfortunately the conspirators have chosen the wrong ally in Thoth-Amon…

Gail Simone wrote the Batgirl HC vol 2: Knightfall Descends, $24.99, for DC Comics and Ardian Syaf and Stanley Lau, among others, have provided the art.  Who doesn’t love that Barbara’s back?  This volume collects #7 – 13 and 0…

As one of my new personal favorites I do feel inclined to point out the work of Lauren Beukes and Inaki Miranda in Fairest #12, $2.99.  Adam Hughes illustrates the cover of a story in which Rapunzel discovers that bloody vengeance will come back to haunt you.  What I’ve seen of Bill Willingham’s work shows that he’s a master of observing the threads that should be obvious, but instead are lost to us.  I sincerely hope that Lauren can at least do a credible job.  I’d hate to think that I got on this train at the last stop…

Young Romance New 52 Valentine’s Day Special, $7.99, by Andy Diggle, Gene Ha, Kenneth Rocafort, and various others.  Love is in the air in the New 52.  This special issue also has perforated Valentine’s Day cards featuring the stars of the various short stories presented here…

IDW is shipping the Dave Stevens Rocketeer Artist’s Edition new printing, price varies.  This was the first of the Artist’s Editions and due to the incredible demand from both retailers and fans IDW is bringing this book back with an all new cover.  I sure hope they give the same treatment to the Simonson Thor edition…

Valiant Entertainment has got Harbinger #0, $3.99, written by Joshua Dysart with art by Mico Suayan and Pere Perez.  Here’s the history of Toyo Harada, Valiant’s most powerful Psionic, how he built the Harbinger Foundation and what his vision of the future is…

Shadowman is the runaway surprise for me though.  Last month’s Shadowman #3 left me on such a high for that book that I’ve got very high expectations for Shadowman #4, $3.99, by Justin Jordan and Patrick Zircher, with a cover Zircher and a variant cover by Dave Johnson.  Witness the battle between Shadowman and Mr. Twist…

There is still plenty more that aren't listed. For a more complete list, feel free to visit your local comic store or favorite site. If you’re interested in more of what I think, follow me on Twitter at Mycomicstore001 or like my Facebook page.

Michael R. Murray is a full time Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service who just recently got confirmation for some big doings on Free Comic Book Day and now he’s giddy as a schoolboy at Prom.
