JJ Abrams, master of secrets, gave Star Trek fans a little more to contemplate with the premiere of the film's Super Bowl ad.
In a mere 30 seconds, the Star Trek Into Darkness teaser shows a world in disarray - our world.
Director Abrams has brought Star Fleet home to wage a battle against one of their own, a villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch, in an effort to save what seem to be countless screaming civilians, according to The Inquisitr.
As the ad cuts through various explosions, the dialog gives a hint of the type of evil Kirk and crew are up against. Cumberbatch’s voice-over issues his cocky taunt - “Shall we begin?” - that fans heard in the official trailer. But we also see Kirk and the villain face off, separated by jail cell glass, and hear Cumberbatch claim to be better at “Everything.”
That may be a little much for the prideful Kirk, played by Chris Pine, to swallow.
However, the most striking clip shows a badly damaged Enterprise plummeting to Earth, leaving fans to wonder what a crew is to do without their ship.
The closely guarded plot secrets of Star Trek Into Darkness will be revealed May 17.
