Oscar Pistorius attends bail hearing

By Bonnie Ping,

Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair heard two versions of Reeva Steenkamp’s, 29, death in Oscar Pistorius’s, 26, bail hearing today.

According to Time, Pistorius read his affidavit stating he “had no intention to kill my girlfriend. Nothing can be further from the truth. I deny the allegation in the strongest terms.”

Pistorius recounts the events of February 13th, before he and Steenkamp went to sleep. He says that he woke up in the middle of the night and heard a noise in the bathroom. He states that he grabbed his gun and fired four shots in defense of him and Ms. Steenkamp. Only after he fired the shots did he realize that Ms. Steenkamp was not in their bed. He states that Ms. Steenkamp died in his arms while he tried reviving her.

The prosecution tells a different story, he says that Ms. Steenkamp was hiding in the bathroom after a confrontation with Mr. Pistorius.

According to the L.A. Times, Prosecutor Gerrie Nel stated “it still would have been a premeditated murder because he shot through the door into a tiny room containing just the toilet and measuring no more than 16 square feet.”

The Magistrate believed the prosecution’s version because Mr. Pistorius was denied bail.
