Oscar Pistorius, 26, is being charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
According to NBC News, the Paralympics star may have mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder.
Nicknamed ‘Blade Runner’ because he races wearing carbon fiber prosthetic blades, Pistorius was charged Thursday with the murder, which took place at his South African home in a gated community.
Steenkamp, a model who was outspoken on Twitter against rape and abuse of women, was shot four times just before dawn, reports the Associated Press.
"Yes there are witnesses and there have also been interviews this morning," said police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes. "We are talking about neighbors and people that heard things that happened earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place."
Apparently this isn’t the first time there has been problems at the Pistorius household, said Beukes. There have been “allegations of domestic abuse” and previous incidents.
"I'm not going to elaborate on it but there have been incidents (at Pistorius' home)," Beukes said.
Found at the scene of the crime was a 9 mm pistol. Pistorius is to appear in court later Thursday on murder charges. The South Africa police don’t name suspects until they appear in court, but with this “there is no other suspect involved,” Beukes said.
UPDATE: The Los Angeles Times reports that he will remain in jail overnight.
