Ricki Lake’s daytime talk show The Ricki Lake Show will not be returning for a second season.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Twentieth Television, which produced the show, announced on Monday that the show would be canceled after just its first season.
“While we are proud of the topics the program tackled including childhood obesity, life-after the military, divorce, and addiction we were simply not able to breakthrough the crowded talk show Marketplace,” said Stephen Brown, executive vice president of programming and development for Twentieth Television.
The Ricki Lake Show, which premiered last September, marked Lake’s comeback to daytime television nine years after her popular 90s show Ricki Lake.
Although Lake is a veteran to talk shows, her show couldn’t compete with Katie Couric’s Katie or with the women of The Talk. According to The Los Angeles Times, Lake averaged less than a million viewers with a 0.7 rating, while Couric brought in a 1.9 rating.
Lake said in a statement that she was “so proud of the shows we completed this season” and that she “will continue to be an active and passionate voice for subjects that are close to my heart through a variety of platforms.”
Lake also took to her Twitter to reply to fans who were unhappy with the news. When one fan asked her, "Ricki Lake Show is canceled?!! Say it isn't so :(," Lake replied with, "Sorry it's so. But to me it's a good thing. Change is good!"
