Veteran actor Robert De Niro got emotional on Katie Couric’s daytime talk show Katie on Monday while promoting the film Silver Linings Playbook with co-star Bradley Cooper and director David O. Russell.
Russell’s son has experienced bipolar and mood disorders, and that’s what fueled a lot of the material in the film, which is nominated for eight Oscars.
But as Russell and Cooper spoke about it and did their best to raise awareness on the subject, De Niro, who has four sons, didn’t say much.
When asked how he can relate, he started to cry, “I don't like to get emotional, but I know exactly what [Russell] goes through,” he revealed, The Huffington Post reports.
But this isn’t the firs time he got emotional about the film, The New York Post reports.
Russell explained that when he gave De Niro the script to read, "I thought he was having hay fever, then I realized he was having an emotional reaction and I sat there and watched Robert De Niro cry for 10 minutes and I said, 'Wow he's really connecting with this material and this would be beautiful thing if it could work out, because I think his heart would be there' and it is there."
