On the same day that Sofia Vergara received a shiny diamond engagement ring, she also almost got shiny handcuffs around her wrists.
In a special Valentine's Day edition of The Ellen Show on Thursday, the funnywoman told Ellen DeGeneres how exactly the moment her businessman now-fiance Nick Loeb popped the question at Chichén-Itzá pyramid, Mexico last summer almost dropped both of them in jail, as reported by E! News.
Vergara said that the couple got engaged on July 10, 2012, her 40th birthday, when on vacation in Mexico.
She said that Loeb asked her to get on top of the pyramid to take some pictures, admitting that he had gotten the permission to be on the peak, more specifically, on top of the archaeological structure.
It apparently offended the locals, and while going down, they were almost arrested.
"He had said he had gotten permission," Sofia said.
"I swear to god he said he had gotten permission to go up there and take a picture. So I said, 'OK, let's go.' So I went up, he took the ring out there. I made sure I like it," adding, "I like it, I put it on immediately and I said yes."
"When we came down they want to arrest us because there were some nationals, no…local people got really upset and they thought I was [taking] advantage of the situation, but it was not true."
The couple was initially seen with engagement rings last year in August, Us Magazine reported.
The Modern Family star confirmed their engagement, but said that she had no plans for marriage.
"I haven't started planning anything because everything has been very recent,” Vergara said.
"I am kind of, you know, working a lot — I just started the Modern Family season — so I don’t know yet. No plans."
