By Meaghan Fleming,

Beasts Of The Southern Wild’s Oscar-nominated Quvenzhané Wallis has joined the upcoming movie Annie as the title character.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Sony Pictures announced Sunday that nine-year-old Wallis will appear in an upcoming adaptation of Annie. The movie is a new take on the Broadway musical, Annie and the books Little Orphan Annie.

Will Gluck (Easy A) is directing the movie and revising the screenplay reported Deadline. James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith, Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, Jay Brown and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith are all producing the film. The role of Annie was originally meant for Smith’s daughter Willow, but she is now too old to play the part.

Sony’s President of Production Hannah Minghella welcomed Wallis to the cast in the following statement:

“With the recent Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim, Quvenzhané Wallis is a true star and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star,” Minghella said. “She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can’t wait for audiences to further discover her.”

The film will begin production later on in the year and with the release date predicted at late 2014.
