Walt Disney Pictures has confirmed that the production of Star Wars standalone films are underway. These productions are a separate entity from the upcoming trilogy directed by J. J. Abrams.
David Igor, CEO of Walt Disney Co., made the announcement in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday.
“There has been speculation about some standalone films that have been in development, and I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films."
Ace Showbiz reports the standalone films would be released during the six year period in which the trilogy will be released, beginning in 2015. The films will debut in between each installment of the trilogy, as opposed to running directly with the trilogy.
According to The Associated Press, Iger said the movies would be based on “great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga.”
No details have been released as to which characters will be featured, but rumors have begun to swirl that one untitled standalone film will focus on Yoda.
