State of 'The Walking Dead' Season 3 Midseason Chat – Expectations

Here is the first part of the chat in which we discuss the first half of Season 3.

Chris Baggiano

I wouldn’t be surprised if Rick didn't end up dead by the end of this season but the prison beating back Woodbury. Rick has pretty much run his course as a character and he's definitely on the warpath. And now with the introduction of Tyreese I think it becomes a clear shifting of power.

I mean in the long run I see a good portion of Rick's group surviving, maybe without Rick, and Woodbury taking heavy losses. It's clear the prison is going to be completely ruined and won't be a safe haven anymore and the search for a settling ground will begin again.

I'm not sure what will happen to Woodbury, especially now that the Governor has taken this dark turn. If he doesn’t' survive does Woodbury still survive or does it fall into ruin because it doesn’t have his all or nothing leadership?

Shannon Toohey

Now that would be something. It is interesting that you see Rick going. Thinking about that, he has aged quite a bit in recent episodes. That would be crazy to switch from Rick to somebody else would probably break some sort of television history. Woodbury has a lot of people in it so I don’t know what will happen there.

CB

I mean, I don't think he'll die because that's not how these things work in Hollywood but if they wanted to be true to his character’s story arc they would. His character has done just about everything it can do
Do we really need to see him save the day? Do we need to see him redeem himself (although he really hasn't become a character that needs redemption)?

He should die, or become ridiculously evil and be thrown out of the group and become the new leader of Woodbury, which would be an even crazier turn. But really those are the only two places his character can go without feeling tired and redundant.

ST

I don’t really know what else he's got to do. We do see Carl confronting Rick about not being the leader anymore in the most recent trailer.

CB

It seems like they want us to think that it is an actual choice, when it’s probably more of a red herring than anything.

ST

Rick does not seem to respond well to it. He gets crazy eyes.

CB

This is the first time Rick actually needs the group, before he didn't need them, but now with the baby he is going to need someone to help him take care of it. He can't just take Carl and the baby and run off into the wilderness. And Rick has had crazy eyes now for the entire season so not as shocking.

ST

Haha, yeah. I can see them going in either of those directions. Though it would be hard to do. If he decides to carry on as leader it would be because he continues protecting not Lori anymore but carl and the wee baby Judith. I want to see Judith grow up but realistically a baby in a world of zombies just doesn’t work. I mean don't kill that woman for nothing.

Going off the trailer though how about Andrea naked with the knife? And I just want to throw this out there–in the distant future–or even near future. Do you see Rick and Andrea happening?

CB

God no.

ST

Hahahhaa.

CB

That would be so weird and gross. Although Andrea definitely gets hers, that's for sure, but no that just seems to weird to fathom. Do you want it to happen?

ST

You know i heard it from somewhere else and (it may be a comic thing actually) I tried to warm up to it but could only to a certain point.

CB

I mean only way it would ever happen would be like one of those weird like, right time wrong place romantic encounters.

ST

Or like, I don’t know, they get EMOTIONALLY involved as well down the line.

I don’t know. I don’t know.

CB

I don't see how Rick gets emotionally involved with anyone that isn’t' his immediate family. Dude is a hollow husk of a man, a living zombie (wink, wink).

Before wrapping this up I think I have to ask you what one thing you hope to see in the second half of Season 3.

ST

Hahaha yeah. But yes along with Daryl and Merle's fates being sealed, I am concentrating on Andrea getting her stuff together. And my guilty pleasure is even the subtlest of Daryl and Carol interactions. As a whole I want a reunion with Andrea to become permanent and I want them to move on.

CB

What if Daryl and Carol ran off and sired a daughter named Sheryl?

ST

I support it. I also yearn for the distant moans of walkers, haha.

CB

Yeah that's one thing we didn't mention were Daryl and Merle, for some reason I see them both getting out alive somehow.

ST

I see Daryl 100%, merle I am worried about.

CB

Maybe Merle turns on the Governor in the final battle while Daryl wastes away in a Woodbury prison.

ST

Merle should go full force against that guy!

CB

Let's also not forget that Glen Mazzarra stepped down from being show runner, the same such position change in a year. The last time that happened the show took a dramatic turn in style so who knows what we'll get with the new show runner, Scott Gimple.

ST

Gimple wrote the Sophia barn episode, so maybe there are more little girls in danger.

CB

And since there are only two currently in the show...

Anyways, is there anything else to discuss?

ST

I think that covers most of it. Who knows where the season will end. And who knows what Season 4 will look like, now that we are looking down that road.

CB

Alright, well I hope you enjoyed our little chat. Hopefully we’ll be doing another one after the second half of Season 3.
