Mark Balelo, who was featured on A&E’s reality TV series Storage Wars, has died after an apparent suicide. He was 40.
TMZ reports that he was found in his car in Simi Valley, California. He had the car running in the garage at his auction house and died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
This follows reports that he was arrested over the weekend on drug charges. According to The Wrap, he was arrested Saturday after police responded to a call at his auction house. A police spokesman confirmed that he was charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance and methamphetamine possession.
TMZ’s sources claim that he was distraught after leaving jail. He asked his fiancée to come to his house, fearing that he would hurt himself. He seemed OK on Sunday, but his employees found him dead on Monday.
TMZ reports that an autopsy will be performed today.
Balelo has appeared in several Storage Wars episodes. Entertainment Weekly reports that A&E did not comment on the reports.
Storage Wars has been under scrutiny as of late, thanks to a lawsuit from David Hester in December. He claimed that many aspects of the show are faked in order to keep viewers interested and make the show more dramatic.
