Tennessee congressman admits to trading tweets with recently discovered daughter during State of the Union

By Daniel S Levine,

Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen was trading strange tweets with a 24-year-old woman named Victoria Brink during the State of the Union on Tuesday. While some speculated that the tweets, which were quickly deleted from his official account, may have been the signs of an inappropriate relationship, the unmarried Congressman revealed that Brink is actually a daughter who he only recently discovered.

The Hill first reported on the tweets, which were archived by Politwoops. Each tweet ended with “ilu” and was sent after Brink tweeted to Cohen that she was watching President Obama’s speech.

“Nice to know you were watchin SOTU(state of the union).Happy Valentines beautiful girl. ilu,” one tweet read.

The Hill found that Brink shares her name with a Texas State University student who was in a college co-ed calendar. This report sparked concerns of an inappropriate relationship with a much younger woman and forced Cohen to explain himself.

Cohen told NBC News that Brink is the daughter of a family friend. That friend was one of Cohen’s old girlfriends.

“When she let me know she was watching the State of the Union address I was thrilled that she wanted Steve Cohen to be part of her. I had such joy, that I couldn’t hold back from tweeting her,” Cohen, who never revealed this publicly before, told NBC.

He also spoke with WREG in Memphis, revealing that he only found out about Brink three years ago.

“I Googled her mother, found out she had a child and the math looked pretty accurate...She told me we had a lot of catching up to do,” he said, noting that Brink’s mother later broke the news.

“She said every time I look at her I see the German-Jew in her face, that’s me. I`m Lithuanian, but that’s close enough,” Cohen, 63, added.

Cohen has tried to build a relationship with Brink and is “proud to be her dad.” He also took her on a tour of the Capital and the White House.
