Tim Tebow cancels appearance at controversial church

By Sarah Burbank-Douglas,

Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow has backed out of his commitment to speak at the First Baptist Dallas Church after news of Pastor Robert Jeffress' controversial views were brought to his attention.

Tebow, who become notorious for his touchdown prayer stance, was slated to speak at two sermons on April 28 USA Today reports. However, despite disappointing more than 11,000 followers, Tebow took to Twitter to announce his decision to not appear.

“While I was looking forward to sharing a message of hope and Christ's unconditional love with the faithful members of the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas in April, due to new information that has been brought to my attention, I have decided to cancel my upcoming appearance,” he wrote Thursday morning.

“I will continue to use the platform God has blessed me with to bring Faith, Hope and Love to all those needing a brighter day. Thank you for all of your love and support. God Bless!”

USA Today notes some of Jeffress’ stances on different religions, which includes calling Mormonism a cult, stating Muslims believe in a religion which was created from hell and “promotes pedophilia.”

Jeffress has also spoken out against homosexuality in which he previously stated, "[It] is perverse, it represents a degradation of a person's mind.”

Tebow never specifically addressed any of Jeffress’ stances on religion, but reports suggest if he did his sermons he would receive a severe amount of backlash from his fans.
