Will Smith may have managed to stay out of trouble despite growing up in a rough neighborhood in Philadelphia, but that’s not the case for everyone in the actor’s family.
According to the Huffington Post, Star magazine reported that Dee Lawrence Downs, Smith’s brother-in-law, was arrested on federal drug charges.
Downs, who is married to the Hollywood star’s younger sister Ellen, was arrested Jan. 17 for attempted possession and distribution of at least five kilograms of cocaine, Huffington Post found in the court documents.
However, this isn’t the first time that Downs has been in trouble with the law.
Radar Online found that he was arrested on charges including reckless endangerment and possessing a weapon in May 1985, for possessing a controlled substance in 1987, and for felony charges in 1992 that placed him behind bars.
The news of the most recent crime, however, is likely both humiliating and disappointing for Smith, Star reported.
“This has got to be embarrassing for Will and his family,” a source said. “It is the first time they have been touched by scandal.”
