It seemed like an unlikely twist in the fable of Goldilocks and the Three Bears when an off-duty firefighter noticed an abandoned box on the side of the road.
Brandon Poole, of Long Creek, South Carolina and volunteer firefighter, was driving with his two daughters in his hometown when he spotted a decent-sized cardboard box on the side of the road, according to the Daily Mail UK. Curious he pulled to the side to investigate a little more, and expecting to find puppies and piglets, he found were three baby cubs.
“I thought it was little puppies in that little box, so I got closer to it. I heard squealing so I thought it was baby pigs. I got closer and picked one up -- it was three baby bears,” said Poole in a statement, according to Pawn Nation.
The baby bears each weighed under three pounds. His daughters pleaded to adopt the baby cubs as family pets, however, Poole immediately brought them to rescue officials at Appalachian Bear Rescue.
It still remains unknown as to how the baby cubs ended up in the box, but authorities conclude that human activity was involved. The incident is being further investigated at the moment.
