Modern Family actress Ariel Winter endured a heated family battle when she filed abuse claims against her mother back in November 2012. Now, the young actress is speaking out about her insecurities and how her life is getting better now that she is no longer in the custody of her abusive mother.
Winter, whose guardian is older sister Shanelle Gray, sat down with Teen Vogue where the 15-year-old actress discussed her insecurities, which were heightened by her own mother. She opened up about the recent life-changing events, explaining, “I didn't know my sister much growing up, and I wasn't really allowed to see her. I know now that my sister is the type of person I'd aspire to grow up to be like. It's really interesting how close you can get with somebody in such a short period."
"I had body insecurities when I was younger,” she adds.” I still do. Every girl has insecurities—mine were heightened at the time because my mother wasn't supportive. Now, my sister is always making sure to tell me that I look beautiful." The young starlet reveals that she has learned, "It's about learning to love yourself."
Since making the transformation from her strict lifestyle with her mother, Winter explains that her sister encourages her to live a more normal, teenage life by hanging out with her friends, going out on the weekends, abiding by curfew, helping with chores, and having Sunday family dinners.
"I've never had a curfew before. My life is definitely more normal—and that'll help me grow up like I'm supposed to. Like, I always wanted to be a dancer, and now I'm taking dance classes," she notes.
Winter’s mother, Crystal Workman, has continuously denied allegations of physical and verbal abuse.
