CBS CEO Les Moonves confirmed that the Showtime hit Dexter’s upcoming eighth season will be its last.
Broadcasting & Cable confirmed the news on Monday, noting that Moonves referred to the upcoming season of Showtime’s flagship program as its “last” during a conference call with investors.
According to Deadline, Moonves was asked how he saw the future of Showtime and that future doesn’t appear to include the serial-killer drama.
“Ray Donovan is coming on with Liev Schreiber which comes on with Dexter’s last season starting in June,” Moonves explained, notes Deadline. “And then we have Masters of Sex, a story of Masters and Johnson, which is a very exciting show. A show that you wouldn’t see on CBS but it works on Showtime. And that comes behind Homeland in September. And just announced, we’re doing a series about the Vatican, which I think is rather timely, which Ridley Scott is directing for us. So we’re very excited about that.”
A spokesperson later told The Hollywood Reporter that nothing has been confirmed, but it is looking very likely at this point that this is Dexter’s last season.
Dexter premieres on June 30.
