Cindy Crawford is opening up about her previous relationship with actor Richard Gere, saying their marriage didn’t work out because of their age difference.
Crawford, who is now happily married to Rande Gerber for 15 years, said that at age 22 she wasn’t in the same place in life as Gere, who was 37 at the time. They were married for four years and split in 1995.
"I think a lot of what happened with Richard and I was, I was still 22 and at 22 – as a young woman – I was kind of still figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be and he was already 37," she told Oprah Winfrey on an upcoming episode of Oprah’s Master Class, Page Six reports.
"I just think your twenties for women is such a time when you're starting to come into your own and feel your own power and connect to your inner strength and it's hard to do that – it's hard to change – in a relationship, because what one person might have signed up for, all of a sudden, you're not that anymore," she explained.
She added that she grew up a lot during their marriage, and that changed things. She said, "I think I was more willing at 22 to be, like, 'Okay, I'll follow,' but then you start going, 'Well, I don't want to just follow – I want to lead sometimes and I want to walk side by side sometimes.'"
Fox News reports that Crawford did credit Gere with helping her find her footing when it came to handling her rising fame.
"When I would see how he was with fans when they approached him…. I got to look to him to see how he created boundaries for himself,” she said.
