Taylor Swift usually keeps the identity of the ex-boyfriend that inspires a hit song to herself, but in a recent interview, she talked about her recent Brit Awards performance of “I Knew You Were Trouble” and let out a big clue regarding who inspired it.
"You're balancing the analytical side of your brain, which is telling you where to go and how to go there, with the other side of your brain, which is saying 'Feel everything you're singing, and show it on your face,” she said about performing the song in a new interview with The Sunday Times, excerpted by Glamour. “Feel everything exactly as you felt it when you wrote the song.'"
She continued, "Well, it's not hard to access that emotion when the person the song is directed at is standing by the side of the stage watching.”
That statement started speculation that the song is about 19-year-old Styles, since he and his One Direction bandmates were in the audience at that awards show.
Swift also cryptically tweeted a line from “Trouble” around the time they broke up in early January.
...'til you put me down.

While it might seem unlikely to some that “I Knew You Were Trouble” is about Styles since the song was recorded and released way before they dated in December, there is still a chance it was inspired by the One Direction heartthrob. According to MTV News they had dated once before. They had a brief fling in April of last year.
