Disney already planning ‘Oz The Great and Powerful’ sequel

By Daniel S Levine,

Disney is already planning on making a sequel to Sam Raimi’s Oz The Great And Powerful, which hits theaters today. The news follows actress Mila Kunis’ recent comments in an interview.

Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that the studio has hired Mitchell Kapner to work on a script. Kapner co-wrote the script for Great and Powerful with David Lindsay-Abaire.

THR notes that Kapner has pitched his idea to continue the adventures of the Wizard, played by James Franco, while including elements from L. Frank Baum’s beloved stories. He’s already working on early drafts and Joe Roth will produce the sequel.

As we previously reported, Kunis told E! News that, “We're all signed on for sequels.”

Rachel Weisz, who also stars in Great and Powerful with Franco, Kunis and Michelle Williams, was less sure about a sequel, though. “I hope so,” she said, “If there is one, I'd love to be in it.”

“Wherever Sam goes, I'll go,” Williams added, referring to the director. “I'd do anything Sam asks me to do. I'd get stuck in quicksand with him.”

Raimi also told E! that he’s not signed up for a sequel just yet. After all, he’s planning on writing Evil Dead 4 over the summer, notes The Verge.

Prior to Great and Powerful, Kapner wrote The Whole Nine Yards and The whole Ten Yards.

Great and Powerful is expected to make at least $80 million this weekend.
