The Doe Fund's Sweet: New York

By Lori Alamia,
sweet and savory treats for a great cause

On Thursday March 7, I attended Sweet: New York, a great event for The Doe Fund for their Ready, Willing and Able program. Sponsored by Mercedez Benz, it was held at the Classic Car Club Soho on Hudson Street and featured delicious eats from some of New York’s top restaurants and bakeries. There were also models, stylists, and other fabulous folks in attendance like Cynthia Bailey of the Real Housewives of Atlanta and DJ Hesta Prynn.

Most of us have heard the proverb, “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” This is what The Doe Fund enables for the city’s formerly homeless or incarcerated. The award winning Ready, Willing and Able program gives 1,000 individuals a day a second chance. The Fund provides paid work, meals, safe housing, career development and educational opportunities and more for those in need.

One of the avenues of work they provide is Culinary education. Some students of the program were extra lucky to be placed alongside The Food Network’s Chef Madison Cowan.

Cowan cooked up some delicious curry goat meatballs as well as a luscious coconut custard with pistachios.

Near Chef Cowan, Napa Valley winery Flora Springs had glasses of crisp, smooth Chardonnay and rich Merlot flowing.

While wandering around, I gravitated to the table from Magnolia Bakery to indulge in a red velvet cupcake and incredibly rich and creamy banana pudding

The offerings from City Chefs Catering made me want to have a party just because. Each appetizer like the mini fish taco or the crispy risotto cake was fresh and flavorful.

Asian restaurantTao offered up some delicious spicy tuna over crispy rice
Meanwhile Italian restaurant Lavo prepared their famous kobe beef meatballs with fresh ricotta.

Another hot spot Pescatore and BLT Prime also offered savory eats.

In other sweet eats, Lady M Confections had cheesecake, apple tart and other treats. The Cupcake Bartender offered a little something extra in your cupcake, a little alcohol like Pink Champagne or Red Velvet Moscato.

Fatty Cakes New York had creative cookies like “movie theater” with chocolate chips, popcorn and Swedish fish.

Good for you never tasted so good with sweet offerings from Terri Organic

Many more great eats and drinks were available as DJ Chelsea Leyland played.

The best part of the evening was being able to enjoy all this decadence knowing it was for a great cause. The Doe Fund really makes a lasting difference in people’s lives. Check out their website to learn more about the wonderful work they do.
