Elton John reportedly slapped Jeremiah Fraites of the Lumineers in the face at this year’s Grammy awards. The band was humbly honored by it.
The Lumineers were nominated for two Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Americana Album for their debut studio album entitled The Lumineers. Fraites told Rolling Stone of the surreal feeling he had about the then-impending awards show, saying, “When you have so many things going for you, you start to get weary. When things are bad, there's only one way to go: up. When things are good, there's only one way to go: down.”
Fraites brought his giddy suspicions with him to this year’s 55th Annual Grammy awards and it resulted in a “touching” moment with Elton John. According to the Huffington Post, John had approached the band to tell them he listened to their album and liked it. Fraites blurted out, “There is no f--king way you are a fan!” John then slapped the drummer's face and "put him straight," front man Wesley Schultz recalled.
The Lumineers lost the Best Artist award to the quirky band Fun. and Best Americana Album to blues singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt. But Schultz called the encounter with Elton John a “special moment.” John is known for his verbal smack downs of the pop superstar Madonna, but in this case the international music legend was giving an up-and-comer some tough love and support.
