‘Game of Thrones’ beer to be introduced

By Sarah McClanahan,

A blonde ale modeled after HBO’s Game of Thrones will coincide with the premiere of season three.

HBO has teamed up with New York-based Brewery Ommegang to create a series of four beers influenced by the well-received drama, Game of Thrones. The first to be on tap is a blonde ale titled Iron Throne, reports Beer Pulse.

The TV network chose to partner with Ommegang because of their “expertise and attention to detail.” HBO hoped to capture the nuances of the medieval fantasy in the drink selection.

Josh Goodstadt, HBO’s Director of Global Licensing, believes the venture was successful, stating, “Capturing the authenticity, essence and nature of the show, Iron Throne has the richness, quality and all of the elements one would expect in fine ale.”

At the same time, according to The Washington Post, the partnership wanted to create something light that could be enjoyed while watching the show.

Ommegang brewer, Mike McManus, revealed the character inspiration behind Iron Throne. “We wanted something fair-colored that related to the fair-haired Lannister household. We used a traditional spice in Belgian beer called grains of paradise. We also used lemon peel to make the beer a bit tart.”

What does Iron Throne taste like? Allison Capozza, a spokesperson for Ommegang Brewery, describes the flavor as “lightly malty.”

The second beer, currently in the conceptual stage, is set to be released next fall.

Besides on draft, Iron Throne will be available in 750 ml bottles sold for $8.50 each.

Check out the third season of Game of Thrones on HBO beginning March 31.
