Katharine McPhee turns 29 today!
Katharine Hope McPhee was born in Los Angeles, CA to a TV producer father and vocal coach/cabaret singer mother. Her mother had been an American Idol vocal coach since 2011.
She performed her love for music through school's plays and musical back in high school.
Upon high school graduation, she went to Boston Conservatory for three semester, majoring in musical theater, but dropped out later. McPhee moved back to L.A. to pursue her acting career.
She auditioned for a pilot episode for MTV's You Are Here, but the company never picked up the series. She then appeared in L.A.-based production musical Annie Get Your Gun, for which she was nominated for L.A. Stage Ovation Award, and Crazy.
In 2005, based on her (then-boyfriend, now-husband), Nick Cokas and her parents, McPhee auditioned for American Idol. She sang God Bless the Child by Billie Holiday in the show's San Fransisco audition. During her time in the show, the judges were always in favor of her performance, and used the term "McPheever." McPhee won the second place, losing the winning place from Taylor Hicks.
Before even releasing her first album, McPhee's single, entitled "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/My Destiny" remained on Billboard Hot Singles Chart for more than 58 weeks.
Her first album, self-titled, was launched in early 2007, and sold for 116,000 in the first week, debuting number two in Billboard 200 Albums Chart.
The album's single, "Over It" was peaked at number 29 in Billboard Hot 100.
McPhee then released her second album, Unbroken in early 2010, which sold for 15,000 copies in the first week. Later in 2010, she released a Christmas album entitled Christmas is the Time to Say I Love You, which sold for 1,000 copies in the first week, and debuted as number eleven in Billboard Top Holiday Albums chart.
Other than singing, one of the top ten American Idol earner had also been in favor for acting. She appeared in TV series in movies, including one of the episodes for Ugly Betty, film The House Bunny, The Biggest Loser, You May Not Kiss the Bride, Shark Night 3D, and Smash.
Not only she was acted in Smash, NBC also asked McPhee to provide songs for the TV series.
Early 2008, Katharine McPhee married longtime boyfriend Nick Cokas.
