Wanda Sykes turns 49 today!
Born in Portsmouth, VA, and raised in Washington, D.C. due to her father's employment, Wanda Sykes was born to a banker mother and an army father, who was employed in the Pentagon.
She made her debut performance in front of a live audience in a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase.
Sykes then made her big break in The Chris Rock Show, as a part of the writing team, also appearing several times on the stage. The writing team garnered four Emmy nominations, and she won one of them.
The actress, who was ranked as one of the funniest people people in the US by Entertainment Weekly, then appeared in movies and TV series, such as Curb Your Enthusiasm, Pootie Tang, a main role in Wanda at Large, and even got her own show in Comedy Central's Wanda Does It.
She did not only appear in movies, the American actress also lent her voice for animations, such as Over the Hedge, Barnyard, and Brother Bear 2.
Other than being active on-screen, Wanda Sykes is also a practicing activist. She once appeared in a TV commercial for Think Before You Speak campaign, to reduce the use of homophobic slang in youths.
She is publicly gay, as she married longtime partner Alex after two years of dating.
