HBO's comedy-drama Enlightened has been canceled after airing for two seasons.
Entertainment Weekly reports that the show, created and written by Mike White and Laura Dern, had low ratings consistently despite critical praise.
HBO stated, “It was a very difficult decision. We’ve decided not to continue Enlightened for a third season. We’re proud of the show and we look forward to working with Mike White and Laura Dern in the future.”
The LA Times reports that the audience for the show actually grew from season 1 to season 2. It was stated that the premiere for the second season brought in 90,000 additional viewers, though this was added to an already low viewership.
The finale of the second, and now last, season garnered 220,000 viewers, and HBO execs decided that it was time to take the program off the air.
While Enlightened may not have been a huge success with audiences, actress, Laura Dern, won a Golden Globe for her performance in the first season and the show was also nominated for Best Comedy Series.
