'The Hobbit: There and Back Again' gets new, later release date

By Sarah Burbank-Douglas,

Lord of the Rings fans will have to wait a little bit longer to see how the three-part prequel comes to an end as The Hobbit: There and Back Again has been pushed back from its original release date.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the Peter Jackson-directed conclusion was originally slated for a July 18, 2014 release and has since been moved to a release date of December 17.

Still, fans will be able to get their Hobbit fix with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug slated for a Dec. 13, 2013 date.

Additionally, EW notes that with the change of date the film will not battle for ratings against the X Men: Days of Futures Past, the sequel to 2011's X Men: First Class.

Deadline, who first reported the news, notes that with the new release date in place, the third installment currently is the only film slated for the Dec. 17 release.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey reportedly raked in $300.9 million domestically and $979.9 since its 2012 debut. The subsequent films are expected to be received equally as well.
